All Ages Barn Dance, 2 pm -5 pm

Join us for easy, upbeat social dancing with a live folk band led by an experienced “caller” (the person who teaches the dance and reminds you what to do during the dance). Families with children of ALL ages encouraged, especially during the first hour or so. Dress totally casual or go all out with the plaid shirts, flowy skirts, belt buckles, and cowboy boots! Bring a water bottle. Suggested donation $5-$15. (Children 12 and under are free.)

The church has a small parking lot where you may park if spaces are available. (Note that access to that parking lot is from Forest, which is one-way going north.) There is also ample street parking nearby, also on Forest and surrounding streets. The church is an easy one-block walk north of the Glen Ellyn Metra station. Train station parking is free, as is a small lot just west of the church on Pennsylvania.

Make your way to the 2nd floor gymnasium for dancing. There is an elevator located near the door by the ramp at the inside corner of the parking lot, and there are stairs by the door at the west end of the building. Look for the neon signs! (Or call if you need help getting in: 630-532-7813)

BYO TED Talk Party, 6pm – 8pm

We will celebrate Thomas Jefferson’s birthday with a Bring-Your-Own TED Talk Party in the spirit of his intellectual curiosity. Mac & cheese, “TJ’s” favorite food, will be provided for dinner.

Email the host your 5-minute PowerPoint presentation on a topic* of your  choice. Past topics have been diverse: “How Hydraulics Work,”  “The Most Hated Artist in the World,” “Bad Book Pitches,” “Bobbit Worms,”** to name a few. The best presentations are on a topic you are interested in and want other people to learn about! If you’re struggling to pick a topic, feel free to reach out to me to discuss.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend even if you just want to be part of the audience!

No need to bring anything other than yourselves (and hopefully your presentation!), but if you are someone who must bring something, vegetables/salad/desserts are welcome.

*No NSFW topics, but everything else is fair game. Kindly appreciate if you send me your presentation ahead of time so I can download it to my laptop and have it ready to go 🙂

**Joey, you are never allowed to give this presentation again – bobbit worms are way too scary!

Swing Dancing! 7:15 – 10:00 PM

Come dance the night away with a bunch of your soon-to-be closest friends! This is one of my favorite past times and I’d love to share it with you! For anyone who is new to swing dancing or would like to learn more dance moves, there will be a beginner lesson from 7:15-8pm. Then, from 8-10pm, there will be a time of social dancing where we will put to use what we’ve learned and ask each other to dance! Feel free to dress as fancy as you’d like to, but fanciness is not required!

*Please note: There is $15 cash only cover at the door.*

Thursday April 16th

Oak & Willow Contra Dance, 6:45 – 9:00 PM

Come have fun dancing in a small, friendly setting with a bunch of local church folks! Oak & Willow is the contra dance event that grew out of the 20s/30s ministries at Church of the Resurrection and College Church. If you’ve never contra danced before, no worries – all you have to do is walk and follow directions! Every dance sequence is taught just before we do it and called out while the music is playing, so you don’t have to prepare by watching YouTube or going to weeks of lessons, and everyone else there is happy to help.

There’s a bigger contra dance in Chicago later in the month, so this is a great opportunity to get a preview before the big event.

Admission is $7 (or if that’s a difficulty for any reason, just pay what you can). Dancing starts promptly at 7; arrive early to check in, and there may also be some instruction geared toward beginners prior to the event.

(Note to my fellow introverts: this is the only form of social partner dance I’ve ever discovered where dancing without making conversation is not only possible but sort of the norm. Just sayin’.)
